Exfoliate. Add coarse sea salt or brown sugar to coconut oil for a body scrub that exfoliates and moisturizes at the same time.
Hydrate. A coconut oil hair mask is a great way to add body and shine to your locks. Coconut oil penetrates your strands with moisture and strengthens hair to prevent protein breakdown from harsh chemical in shampoo and conditioner. Coat your hair in oil and leave on for 20-30 minutes before washing as usual.
Soothe. Coconut oil is a great way to soothe dry skin. Rub a bit on elbows, cuticles and other dry areas for penetrating moisture that won’t bother sensitive skin.
Tame. You can use a dab of coconut oil to tame flyaways in place of hairspray. Be careful not to go overboard or your hair will look a little greasy. You can also use it to tame unruly eyebrows!
Remove. Coconut oil is the only thing I use to remove makeup! It works as well if not better than anything I’ve ever bought at the store and it won’t irritate your eyes. (There are tons of chemicals in commercial makeup removers, and it’s nearly impossible not to get any in your eyes/mouth). Dab some on a cotton pad and wipe off. For hard to get off makeup like mascara, leave the oil on for a couple minutes then wipe right off.
Moisturize. Use a touch of coconut oil to moisturize dry, chapped lips. You can keep a small, well-sealed jar of oil in your purse for deep lip hydration during dry cold months.
Freshen. You can also use coconut oil for a technique called ‘oil pulling’ that reduces bacteria in your mouth. Coconut oil is antibacterial and antimicrobial which is what gives it this cleansing power. To oil pull, swish a teaspoon of oil in your mouth for about a minute. This technique has been used for thousands of years in Ayurvedic medicine to whiten teeth, freshen breath and improve gum health.
Balance. Coconut oil is also a natural way to treat yeast infections. The acids found in coconut oil are antimicrobial, antifungal and antibacterial which allows them to break down bacteria and fungus causing the infection and restore the vaginas natural balance. Coconut oil also boosts the immune system and since it doesn’t contain any other ingredients it’s safe to apply directly to your most sensitive areas.
